
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has set out to become Germany’s number one healthcare state. There are already 57 certified health and recreation resorts and 65 preventive medical institutes and rehab clinics throughout the state. By 2006, 49 institutes in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern had already been awarded the rating "wellness" by the Deutsche Wellnessverband (German Wellness Association). Tendency rising. 86,000 people in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are already employed in the health sector. Experts presume a 15 per cent potential rate of increase.
In the health and tourism sector Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is focusing consistently on top quality and the competent care of its guests. "As we expand the development of activities in the health sector, we are putting our stakes on our outstanding, fully developed infrastructure for tourism," says Jürgen Seidel, the Minister of Economic Affiars, Labour and Tourism of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
Since the mid-1990s Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has specifically invested in new developments and trends. Offers for wet and wild water resorts are combined with medical wellness offers. Hotels provide additional medical therapy for their guests. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern’s natural remedies – mud, chalk and salt – are a part of the treatment.
The state government strategically supports the activities of the healthcare industry with the "health industry master plan". The various actors in the healthcare sector are bundled together in BioCon Valley GmbH. Created more than ten years ago from a bioregional competition throughout Germany, BioCon Valley today links a network of overlapping fields in the areas of bio and medical technology, tourism-related healthcare industries and the agricultural and food industries of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Integrated in the interdisciplinary co-operation are medical doctors, medical engineering companies, the information and communication engineering industries as well as the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.
