The food industry is one of the most important sectors of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's economy. It accounts for more than one third of the turnover of this Federal State's production sector – this is far above Germany's nationwide average. And the sector has recorded uninterrupted growth for years now. The approx. 90 companies in the food industry (with 50 or more staff) employ more than 14,000 people. In 2011 they generated total revenues of more than 3.8 billion Euro.
The product range is diverse. It encompasses milk products and juice, bakery goods, sausage and other meat products, baby food, rapeseed oil - and fish, of course. Important hubs for the food industry within MV are the regions of Ludwigslust and Demmin, as well as the island of Rügen. Accordingly, in the harbour town of Sassnitz on Rügen, one of the world's most modern fish factories - the Euro-Baltic Fish-Processing Centre - processes up to 50,000 tonnes of fresh North Sea and Baltic Sea fish annually. Western Mecklenburg can also point to recent path-breaking new business start-ups: this area benefits from its good infrastructure and central location between Hamburg and Berlin. The rural-based administrative districts of Nordwestmecklenburg and Ludwigslust-Parchim respectively form part of the Hamburg metropolitan region since 1 May 2012.
The proximity between local agriculture and the food industry leads to important synergy effects, including extended sales opportunities for farmers and qualitatively high-calibre raw materials for the food sector. Alongside conventionally-cultivated agricultural products, organically-produced foods are getting an ever more positive market feedback from consumers. Roughly one-tenth of the utilised agricultural area in MV is already being used in accordance with EU legislation with regard to organic farming. In total, more than 1,000 facilities in the agricultural and food-producing sector in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern have already achieved certification according to Council Regulation (EC) No 834/2007.
Not least, an asset that the food sector has in this State is the commitment of the Agarmarketing Mecklenburg-Vorpommern e.V. (AMV) network. It provides backing to producers, refiners and manufacturers of food products, including luxury foods, for instance by coordinating marketing activities.
