The institutes of the Wissenschaftsgemeinschaft Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz e.V. (WGL - Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Research Association) are often referred to as the "lighthouses of science". Five of them are located in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
The Leibniz Association in its present form has existed since 1997. It unites over 80 outstanding scientific institutes in Germany. The independent institutes claim to contribute to a holistic scientific understanding of culture and nature. Hereby the name Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646-1716) symbolises interdisciplinary work and the close interaction between theory and practice.
The Leibniz institutes in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, whose research results are in demand worldwide, work predominantly in the fields of natural science and agricultural science.
