Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science

The spectrum of issues dealt with by the two Max Planck Institutes active in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern extends from the aging processes of humans to nuclear fusion.

The Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock examines the reasons, mechanisms and the consequences of the demographic change presently taking place in Germany and Europe.

The Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics is inspired by the sun. In Greifswald research is conducted on the feasibility of energy production by the fusion of light atomic nuclei in future fusion power plants. Presently the "Wendelstein 7-X" fusion plant is being built in Greifswald for practical testing. The headquarters of the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics are located in Garching near Munich. The Greifswald affiliate has existed since 1994.

The supporting representative of the institutes is the non-profit making Max-Planck- Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Wissenschaften (MPG – Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science). It devotes itself above all to basic research in the fields of natural, social and human science. The physicist Max Planck (1858-1947), whose name the society bears, is considered to be the father of the quantum theory.
