The University of Greifswald celebrated a special anniversary in 2006 under the motto "Wissen lockt – knowledge is captivating": 550 years ago – in the year 1456 – the university was founded following the initiative of the mayor of Greifswald, Heinrich Rubenow. In 1933 the institute, rich in tradition, received the name Ernst Moritz Arndt (1769-1860). Arndt, who had studied theology in Greifswald, taught History here between 1801 and 1806.
Over 50 fields of study are offered by the University of Greifswald in the areas of the humanities, sociology and natural science. The number of students enrolled has been growing steadily and has tripled since 1990. In the winter semester 2004/2005 for the first time over 10,000 students were enrolled in Greifswald. The university is popular with new applicants because of good student support, modern infrastructure and, last but not least, an environment whose landscape and cultural history are very attractive. Exchange programmes with universities in 28 countries contribute to Greifswald’s internationality.
Scientific research and university education concentrate on Biology and Health with special focus on Microbiology, Bio-technology, Community Medicine and Landscape Ecology, Plasma Physics, Geographic and Geological Science, Cultural Science with focus on northern and eastern Europe as well as Jurisprudence, Economics and Political Science. Research is often conducted in interdisciplinary projects and in close cooperation with local institutes and enterprises. Furthermore, a multitude of international contacts exists.
