The Alma Mater Rostociensis was founded 1419. It is the oldest university in northern Europe – in the region of the Hanseatic League of towns.
The initial faculties were Facultas Artium – which developed to become today's Faculty of Philosophy as well as the Faculty of Law and Medicine. A few years later (1432) the spectrum of classical general studies was completed with Theology. In the 20th century a Faculty of Agricultural Science, of Social Science and of Mathematics and Natural Science were added and in 1950 a novelty among classical German universities – a faculty of engineering science – was included.
Presently almost 15,000 students are enrolled at the University of Rostock. The spectrum of approximately 60 fields in altogether nine faculties extends from A as in Agricultural Ecology to D as in Dental Medicine and M as in Mechanical Engineering and on to Z as in Zoology. The offer is supplemented by remote courses and further education in scientific fields. Exchange programmes and summer courses enable students to be educated in many countries throughout the world or – on the other hand – to attend part of their studies in the venerable Hanseatic city.
As a full-rigged university with all the advantages of two technical faculties, the university stakes on interdisciplinary cooperation in research compounds and competence centres. Its profile is characterised by research focus on biotechnology, basic research for new materials, information and communication technologies, environmental research and the development of nautical systems and processes. Regenerative Medicine as well as the Reason and Impact Analysis of Demographic Changes attract increasing attention.
In addition to internal university research cooperation there is a wide range of cooperation with research institutes outside the universities in the region. Biology and Physics departments work together closely with the Institut für Ostseeforschung (Institute for Baltic Sea Research) and with the Institut für Atmosphärenphysik (Insitute for Atmosphere Physics), Chemistry departments with the Institut für Organische Katalyse (Institute for Organic Catalysis), law students with the Ostseeinstitut für See- und Umweltrecht (Baltic Sea Institute for Maritime and Environmental Law) as well as with the Institut für Bankrecht und Bankwirtschaft (Institute for Bank Law and Bank Economics). Cooperation with the Fraunhofer-Institut für Graphische Datenverarbeitung (Fraunhofer Institute for Graphic Data Processing) and with the Max-Planck-Insitut für demographische Forschung (Max-Planck Institute for Demographic Research) is particularly intensive.
