Since September 2006 the University of the Federal Labour Office – a state- approved university of applied sciences for labour market management – has been offering the possibility to qualify for basic undergraduate studies in specialist tasks related to labour market policy to those who are interested in studying at the sites in Schwerin and Mannheim. During their studies students are temporarily employed by the Federal Labour Office.
The studies are designed and organised so that the qualifications acquired can also be applied outside the Federal Labour Office. Comparable expert knowledge is required, in particular, by communities as well as by non-profit-making and private organisations, which implement a considerable part of the labour market policy, and by manpower service providers.
Furthermore, advanced training for employees of the Federal Labour Office and research concerning labour-market related issues belong to the university’s functions.
The university buildings are situated in the northern part of the state capital in the district called Gross Medewege. The construction project was designed and built according to strict ecological principles. The facades of the U-shaped campus are characterised by a great deal of glass and light wooden elements. The 300 accommodation facilities for students have been optimised for agreeable studying and living. For the handicapped there is specially adapted accommodation. Areas for games, sport and recreation have been integrated into the total concept.
The auditorium building is ideally equipped, also for the handicapped, and offers a friendly atmosphere. In addition to 15 lecture halls, there is a modern "auditorium maximum". Further facilities include another six rooms for small groups, two rooms for communication training, a library and a canteen.
The Labour Market Management course qualifies students to deal with tasks related to mediation and integration, the provision of benefits and the allocation of resources within the Labour Office. Its special features are modular structure, short study times and consistent practical experience orientation.
Full-time studies require three years and result in a certified Bachelor of Arts (B.A) degree. The students are employed by the Labour Office during their studies.
Studies are divided into the following sectors:
It is possible to specialise in the fourth and fifth trimesters. The special courses "Provision of Benefits" and "Allocation of Resources" are offered in Schwerin, whereas "Mediation and Integration" is offered in Mannheim.
