In addition to the universities rich in tradition such as the Ernst Moritz Arndt University of Greifswald and the University of Rostock, there is the Rostock University of Music and Drama and three high-performance universities in Neubrandenburg, Stralsund and Wismar. In addition there is an academy for public administration, police and judicial administration in Güstrow as well as the private Baltic College. In addition there is the Hochschule der Bundesagentur für Arbeit (College of the Federal Agency for Labour) in Schwerin.
The traditional and the modern – the state universities combine both. All university campuses have been extensively redeveloped and newly constructed in recent years. State-of-the-art laboratories and equipment, for example, are now available for research and education.
Innovative curriculum offers and careful support by the teaching staff are two more reasons for the continuous increase in the number of students in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern: In the winter semester 2012/13 there were about 40,471 students enrolled. Hardly any other federal state in Germany has such a favourable ratio of students to scientists as here. Therefore in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern an above average percentage of students graduate within the standard time of studies. The universities of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern have repeatedly received top evaluations in ranking studies for their good study environment and their short training periods. The Centrum für Hochschulentwicklung (CHE – Centre for University Development) recommends, for example, the universities of Rostock and Greifswald for several fields as the best institute in the Federal Republic for "students who are determined to finish their studies quickly in a caring environment".
Along with education our universities are engaged in research. Focal points are micro biology and plasma physics, catalysis research, oceanographic research or research on livestock as well as the demography and culture of the Baltic region. Moreover, there are state-wide research focal points. Those are above all to be found in the areas of biotechnology and medical engineering and are to serve the rapid transfer of the newest scientific findings into practical solutions or products. In order to achieve this, experts from commercial enterprises work in close cooperation with university scientists in networks like for example the BioCon Valley ® GmbH.
In order to sustain the competitiveness of our universities in the future, the academic landscape in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is being restructured. Curriculum offers will be concentrated and scientific profiles will be sharpened. To tackle these tasks the state university law of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern was amended at the beginning of 2006.
