Education begins at an early age in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern – already in nursery school. The primary school, the orientation form (5th and 6th classes) and the regional school are aligned with pre-school education. Not until after that does education branch out. Due to the long learning process together until the 7th class, all children and young people receive the same educational opportunities.
After obtaining the school leaving certificate young people can complete their first vocational training at the numerous vocational schools or colleges and universities in our state. The number of people studying here is growing constantly. In the winter semester 2009/10 there were almost 38,500 students. It is no wonder: trendsetting courses of study, a long academic tradition, good guidance for students and last but not least the location of the institutions of higher learning in one of the most beautiful regions of Germany speak for Mecklenburg-Vorpommern as an attractive place to study.
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern distinguishes itself more and more as a centre of science. In recent years along with universities many research institutes outside the universities have taken root here. Leading-edge research is promoted by the state: In line with the state contest "Forschung schafft Arbeitsplätze – Zukunft für Mecklenburg-Vorpommern" ("Research creates jobs – future for Mecklenburg-Vorpommern") the Ministry of Education specially supports projects within the state research focal points of "regenerative medicine" and "multimedia content management in mobile surroundings".
