What would summer be like without bathing? This question is not even liable to come up in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, as the land borders on the open Baltic Sea over a length of more than 350 kilometres.
The beneficial effects of salt water and fresh sea air were discovered about 200 years ago. Soon after that the first seaside resorts developed along the coast of the Baltic Sea. Heiligendamm, known as the famous "White Town by the Sea", is the oldest of the existing seaside resorts.
Rugged cliffs and white sandy beaches, elegant seaside resorts and picturesque fishing villages, hustle as well as contemplative peace – the coast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has something to satisfy any taste. Whether you like high waves or sunbathing, you will not be disappointed: The islands and peninsulas belong to the sunniest spots in Germany.
You will find a great variety of magnificent beaches at the Baltic Sea; among them are numerous nudist beaches. You would like to go on a bathing holiday with your dog? No problem! In many places your four-legged friend is allowed to join you on the beach.
In the summertime the crystal-clear water of the numerous lakes – left inland during the last Ice Age - tempt you to go for a swim, too. On the Müritz, Schwerin Lake or Plau Lake you can also sail, canoe, row or fish, to your heart’s content.
The water quality of the over 400 bathing sites at the Baltic Sea and of inland waters is regularly checked. The most recent bathing map can be downloaded under:
