Species of fish

The main species of fish in the Baltic Sea are among others herring, cod, flounder, plaice and needle fish.

The habitat of many species depends on the salt content of the water. In the Boddens and near the coast you can also find immigrated fresh water fish such as perch, pikeperch, pike and bream.

Furthermore, there are migrating fish above all salmonide and eel, which alternate between sea water and fresh water for spawning. Salmon and sea trout are more numerous again. Their stock has recovered during recent years thanks to restocking programmes for sea trout in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Among the most numerous fresh water fish in the inland waters of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are pike and carp, perch and bream, European roach and sheath fish, tench and pikeperch. There is a good stock of trout in identified salmonide waters.
