Who doesn’t know the majestic chalk cliffs of the island of Rügen which have been eternalised on canvas by the romanticist Caspar David Friedrich, or the mysterious "Hovering Angel" by the expressionist sculptor Ernst Barlach? In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern it is possible to have a direct encounter with the works and the sources of inspiration of those two great artists.
The art museums in our state guard precious treasures of the fine arts from many centuries and present them in an impressive way. It is not a matter of coincidence that the State Museum in Schwerin was elected the German "Museum of the Year" in 2005.
When visiting Mecklenburg-Vorpommern you will realise that the great artistic past lives on in the present. In lively towns and small villages, in castles but also at quite unusual places, you will discover exhibition sites of classical and modern art. The numerous galleries in our state provide a comprehensive survey of the present day art scene. And finally the artists themselves are those who fill tradition in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern with new life: Many sculptors and metal designers, painters and graphic artists, ceramicists, textile and paper designers have found their harbourage here.
