Variegated – there is no better word to describe the museum landscape in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. In addition to the leading visitor magnets like the German Museum for Oceanography in Stralsund or the Pomeranian State Museum in Greifswald, there is a multitude of larger and smaller institutions with varying subject areas: Along with technical museums there are historico-cultural museums, open-air museums, personal museums, literature museums, museums of local history and many others.
The art collections of our state host unique treasures. The State Museum in Schwerin calls a significant collection of Dutch paintings from the 16th century its own. At other places a comprehensive stock of modern German art is to be discovered. As a museum of our times, the art collection of Neubrandenburg accompanies, above all, the current art process. In Güstrow original sculptures of the Expressionist sculptor Ernst Barlach attract visitors to the Gertrudenkapelle and to his idyllically situated studio house.
And due to the fact that our state has been generously endowed by nature, our museums also devote particular attention to these treasures: In the museums of natural science everything focuses on water and forest, mussels and amber, clay and erratic boulders. In addition to hard facts, legends sometimes also provide material for an exhibition. An example of this is the Vineta Museum in Barth, which traces the secrets of the legendary town at the bottom of the sea and belongs to the historical museums.
