An opera beneath the stars and Low German tales, Shakespearean dramas and political satire, dancing puppets and dancing people: When the curtain rises in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, variety is on the programme. The range of facilities extends from the large theatre with several divisions to open-air stages which also give culture an address even in small towns.
The Mecklenburg Staatstheater (State Theatre) in Schwerin belongs to the large theatres which are well-known beyond the borders of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The attractiveness of the building and the high quality of artistic performance are important factors for this success. The Castle Festival has established itself as an additional attraction: Open-air performances have been enjoyed here by thousands of spectators each summer since 1993. Schwerin has made a name for itself especially with the great opera productions in the Old Garden. The Rostock Volkstheater is another multi-division theatre, i.e. audiences can enjoy drama and ballet, as well as concerts and opera here. In comparison the State Theatre in Parchim on the other hand has distinguished itself in particular as a theatre for children and the younger generation.
A similar wealth of facets can also be seen in other areas of the theatrical landscape in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern – be it in the open-air theatres and on Low German stages or in the puppet theatre and theatre for children.
