Lewitz Landscape Conservation Area

Lewitz Landscape Conservation Area

A natural paradise with endless spaces – this is the Lewitz, stretching between Neustadt-Glewe in the south and Schwerin in the north. The region, which constitutes an area of 120 square kilometres, was an impassable terrain of fens and swamps until the last century. Today a maze of trenches and canals characterises the Lewitz. Ponds covering 8 square kilometres bear evidence of flourishing fish farming where carp is a particular speciality.

In contrast, the region along the Elde River, which has not been straightened, presents itself as a more rugged terrain. Exploring the Waldlewitz is rewarding for hikers as well as cyclists. These green lungs are distinguished by a great variety of species just as is the whole landscape conservation area. Hence "Lewitz" is still entitled to its old Slavic name which means "hunting area" and "region rich in game".
