Liep Fortress Landscape Conservation Area

On the southern banks of the Recknitz River, north of Liepen and Thelkow, stretches the 2-square-kilometre-large Liep Fortress Landscape Conservation Area. A hilly ground moraine landscape of basins without outlets, small bodies of water and lakes characterise this region. Burgsee near Liepen and the Teufelsee Nature Reserve near Thelkow are particularly significant.

North of Teufelssee a mound grave and two large erratic boulders bear evidence of the history of an old cultural landscape. Only an earth rampart, it is true, still recalls the existence of the Liep Fortress, a refuge fortress within the Slavic fortress system.

Very old stocks of beech and numerous rare plants underscore the significance of this landscape conservation area.
