Lower Peene Valley Landscape Conservation Area

Not without reason is the Peene River referred to as the "Amazon of the north". The unspoiled nature of the river landscape is the habitat of many animals and plants which are rare or endangered species.

The landscape conservation area called "Lower Peene Valley" lies between Demmin and the administrative district border near Groß Toitin. The region covering 32 square kilometres is one of the most valuable river valley moors in Germany with its great variety of species. Globe flowers and orchids thrive here; the beaver and the fishotter are also at home in this area.

Joining the beaver and fishotter are the numerous birds which breed in the waters of the glacial valley of the Lower Peene. In the Peene Valley 156 species have been identified. The multitude of biotopes existing here renders particular value to the area.
