The landscape conservation area comprises Schwerin Outer Lake and the bordering territories. In the west it is bordered by Alt Meteln and Groß Trebbow. In the north it stretches as far as Neu Viecheln, in the west as far as Neuhof near Langen Jarchow and in the south to Wickendorf. The island of Lieps also belongs to the area covering more than 80 square kilometres at the northern tip of Outer Lake; the island serves as a cattle pasture in the summer. Inhabitated already in the last Stone Age, the island has a 20-metre-wide reed belt on its south-eastern shore. Here a great crested grebe colony of 350 breeding pairs can be found that is the largest colony in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The entire island is almost completely surrounded by a forest belt containing black alder, ash and silver willow. There is a place to moor on the east side of the island.
