Biosphere Reserves

Biosphere means habitat – for man as well as for animals and plants. Since 1970, 440 biosphere reserves have been established in 97 countries of the world within the framework of the UNESCO programme entitled "Man and the Biosphere". By means of such culture landscapes, future models for man's economy and way of living shall serve as examples of how the environment can be preserved. Conventional environment protection is only part of this ambitious task, which also comprises economic, cultural and social aspects.

Simultaneously biosphere reserves serve the research of the interactions between man and the environment, the ecological observation of the environment and environmental development. Thus they are a contribution to the protection of our natural environment. At the same time they require sustainable economic development both from a social cultural and an ecological aspect. For this purpose, tradition and innovation are linked to each other by way of example.

In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern there are three biosphere reserves: the forest, moor and lake landscape of the Schaalsee Biosphere Reserve, the coastal landscape of the South- east Rügen Biosphere Reserve and the national park called Mecklenburgisches Elbetal. This park belongs to the supra-regional biosphere reserve called Flusslandschaft Elbe (Elbe River landscape).
