National parks are landscapes where nature can develop according to its own laws. Hence areas for retreat are formed which are vital for wildlife and plants. National parks are indispensable for the preservation of the biological diversity and richness in species on our planet. At the same time they provide a unique background of experience for environmental research and education. The inestimable value of national parks for tourism and recreation is also a decisive benefit for the development of the respective region.
Commercial exploitation is only allowed under strict conditions or not at all. However, anyone who wants to enjoy the unique beauty of nature is heartily welcome. Information centres instruct all nature lovers about the special features of the sensitive habitats and provide environmental education for young and old.

Müritz National Park comprises 322 square kilometres of forests and lakes. With its 30 square kilometres the smallest German national park is Jasmund National Park on the island of Rügen. Among others, Königsstuhl, one of the famous chalk cliffs of Rügen, belongs to this region.
