The "Mecklenburgisches Elbtal" Nature Park is located between the small towns of Boizenburg and Dömitz at the border to Lower Saxony. The Mecklenburg Elbe Valley has also been part of the supra-regional UNESCO Biosphere Reserve called "Flusslandschaft Elbe" (Elbe River Landscape) since 1997.

The pristine nature of the riverside meadows has been preserved due to the many years of isolation along the internal German border. The character of the meadows has been formed by frequent flooding. The Elbe meadows are lined by large inland dunes, near-natural forests and so-called softwood meadows. Several species of willows are predominant here.

Rare plants and animals feel at home today in these pristine habitats. The swamp fleabane grows in the flooded area. In the summertime sea-eagles can be seen in the air. Even the very rare summer-snipe still breeds along the Elbe and its branches. In autumn cranes and geese rest here while other bird species spend the winter.
