Great Moor of Ribnitz

Feature Description
Administrative district(s) or town: North Vorpommern and Bad Doberan
Size: 2.74 square kilometres
Reserve since: 1939
Location: The reserve stretches along the coast between Graal-Müritz in the west and Neuhaus in the east.

Ribnitz Großes Moor (the Great Moor of Ribnitz) is a rain moor which has been damaged significantly by peat cutting and drainage. Alder woods with elongated sedge as well as birch and pine fenwoods grow in the southern part of the reserve. In the north, pine peatmoss turf is found, among others, and pine fenwoods with wild rosemary have been preserved. White beak-sedge and round-leaved sundew belong to its interesting flora.

Two crane pairs breed in the Great Moor of Ribnitz and the fish otter also finds its habitat here. The reserve is the hunting ground of the white-tailed eagle and the resting place of the short-eared owl. The smooth snake and European adder belong to the reptiles found here. In the 90s drainage was halted and the moor was re-irrigated. Visitors can explore the area on a nature trail.
