Santow Lake

Feature Description
Administrative district(s) or town: North-west Mecklenburg
Size: 2.4 square kilometres
Reserve since: 1993
Location: Santow Lake is located north-east of Grevesmühlen, approximately two kilometres from the district administrative centre.

In 1710 Santow Lake was lowered by two to three metres through the construction of a connecting trench. In the time to follow, meadows and pastures formed on dried lake terraces and in siltated shallows. In the 1960s meadows which had become too wet were left to nature and reeds spread here.

On the south shore there is a nearly 200-metre-wide lake terrace which is dominated by small sedge and marsh areas. This is also where swamp gentian grows.

Water birds breed in the reeds, and in autumn white-fronted geese and bean geese settle on the lake to rest. It is planned to restore the draw area of the eutrophicated lake in order to reduce the water’s nutrients.

From a trail leading around the reserve nature friends can enjoy a scenic view of the lake lowlands. Information charts are located south of Warnow and Santow.
