Upahl and Lenzen Lake

Feature Description
Administrative district(s) or town: Güstrow and Parchim
Size: 5.20 square kilometres
Reserve since: 1978
Location: The reserve lies twelve kilometres south of Güstrow.

Clashing interests between the owners of meadows and mills have caused repeated alterations of the water level in the lakes since the 13th century.

Above all beech thrive on the loamy soil surrounding the lake. Some of the trees are already 180 years old. Further, alder fenwood grow directly at the water’s edge. Rare water horsetail still grows above all in Lenzen Lake, in spite of the high input of nutrients from the surrounding fields.

In the reserve there is an eyrie of white-tailed eagles which has always been populated ever since its discovery in 1920.

The best view of both lakes is from above; there are several lookout points along the roads between Prüzen-Lohmen and Lenzen-Ruchow which offer a sightworthy panorama.
