Wisent Reserve on Damerower Werder

The Damerower Werder nature reserve invites nature friends to watch the wisent in their natural environment. The peninsula in Kölpin Lake near Jabel with its extensive wooded area of 3.2 square kilometres offers wild bovine ideal living conditions, thus also enabling re-breeding without difficulty: Every year approximately 10 calves are born here. Hence, the reserve makes a contribution to the preservation of the indigenous species formerly found throughout Europe and which nearly became extinct in the 19th century.

The wisent, which externally resembles the American bison, cohabit in herds of up to 20 animals. The wisent reserve in Damerow is the home of three herds. Visitors can best watch these up to 1,000-kilogram-heavy colossuses during their feedings which take place in the show preserves twice a day at 11 a.m. and at 3 p.m.

The Wisent Reserve on Damerower Werder disposes of an info centre where interesting details about the history of the reserve and the breeding of wisent can be found.
