The domestic zoological garden in Sassnitz is situated on the outskirts of the Jasmund National Park and offers adults and children an excursion through the world of native animals: Wild boars, raccoons, red kites and martens, mouflons and fallow deer are at home here. Altogether, more than 360 animals inhabit the 25,000-square- metres grounds.
Not only native species, but also “foreigners”, such as monkeys, attract visitors to Sassnitz’s zoological garden. What is more, children can look forward to the petting zoo and the playground. Amidst this varied programme special care is also devoted to environmental education: Those of you who are interested in exploring the nature trail of the zoological garden will learn a great deal about native flora and fauna along the way and will discover that the island of Rügen even has “hotels” for insects.
