Experience Nature

Beaches and bluffs along a coast of 1,700 kilometres. There are also 2,014 lakes which ensure that the way to the water is never too long. A land where the beaver and the white-tail eagle are at home and where storks and cranes have their nests: in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern you will experience nature in its entire diversity – gentle hills and steep cliffs, sandy dunes and luscious meadows, unspoiled woods and well-farmed fields.

We are dedicated to preserve these treasures. For this reason our state has identified numerous protected areas: there are almost 300 nature reserves and more than 140 large landscape conservation areas in addition to three biosphere reserves and seven nature parks. Last but not least three of the twelve German national parks are located in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern which is of great supra-regional significance as a breeding and resting area for birds.

Not only migratory birds are attracted by our intact nature, but also tourists are fascinated: During recent years more and more holidaymakers and visitors to health resorts have discovered this state with the greatest abundance of water in Germany. Hereby Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has mastered the challenge to unite tourism and the protection of nature. Hence the protected areas have also been partially opened to tourists and local people seeking recreation.

Organic farming, the utilisation of renewable raw materials and the use of sustainable energies are important measures to secure the natural wealth of the state for coming generations. The Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Foundation for the Protection of Nature and the Environment supports nature protection programmes, acquires areas which are important for the protection of nature and tends to their maintenance, preservation and development. Furthermore, the foundation develops its own projects for the protection of waters and the landscape.
