Bad Sülze

Historical facts

Bad Sülze was founded in the 13th century by Rostock merchants. The town owes its foundation to the saliniferous sources in the surrounding lowlands of the Recknitz. There is evidence that the first saltern existed already in 1229. Salt production remained an important economic factor for Bad Sülze until the early 20th century.

The Thirty Years? War entailed drastic deterioration: the town of Bad Sülze was largely destroyed. Domestic industry was affected as well: The saltern was forced to temporarily discontinue production in 1620.

Bad Sülze underwent reflation in 1822, when it first became known as a health spa for salt water and mud treatments. In 1927 the town was granted the status of a health resort and henceforth merited the prefix "Bad".

The late Romanesque parish church, which was built in the 13th century and still shapes the townscape today, is a remnant of the early days in Bad Sülze. Housing construction predominantly dates back to the 18th and 19th century. Among other remnants still preserved today is the former saline office from 1759 which accommodates the Salt Museum.
