Where did she come from? Who was her maker? Nobody knows. Ever since the morning of New Year's Day in 2005 a charming little mermaid has been sitting on a cliff in the Baltic Sea off the coast of Boltenhagen.

Ubiquitous sun, sea and sand - that is what summer in Boltenhagen is like. From the pier you can watch the ships casting off for Lübeck. Do you feel like setting sail, too? Then board one of the excursion boats that will take you on an eventful tour on the Baltic Sea. Spa gardens, esplanades and summer residences invite to stay. But the recreational programme has more to offer than that: Take in a walking tour along the cliff line, a marvellous experience - no matter what the weather is like.
The former fishing village of Boltenhagen developed into a Baltic seaside resort at the beginning of the 19th century. In 1803 the Bothmer family is said to have parked their beach trolley here, as they discovered the 3-km-long sandy beach for bathing. The first guest houses, hotels and beach villas built were from 1838. When the author and poet Fritz Reuter settled here in the middle of the 19th century, the town already ranked among the largest seaside resorts in Mecklenburg. Only the Baltic seaside resort of Heiligendamm looks back on a longer tradition than Boltenhagen.
