The town of Stargard was first mentioned in 1170, in those days still part of Pomerania. In the wake of the Treaty of Kremmen, Stargard was ceded to Brandenburg in 1236. Forthwith, John I, Margrave of Brandenburg, set out to build a fortress. By 1258 the work was largely completed. The fortress is the oldest preserved secular structure in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. In 1259 Stargard was granted town status according to Brandenburg law. After 1292 the town and state became part of Mecklenburg. Between 1352 and 1471 the Dukes of Mecklenburg-Stargard resided in the fortress.
In 1758 large parts of the town inhabited by the land-cultivating townsmen and artisans were destroyed by a fire. The present day street pattern dates back to the time when Stargard was rebuilt.
In 1929 the town acquired the fortress and, from then on, was named Burg Stargard. The town and the fortress both outlasted World War II without suffering great damage and were extensively redeveloped after 1990.
