The importance the people of Burg Stargard attributed to the old fortress can be seen in the town's name - a double tribute to this ancient structure: "Burg" is the German word for "fortress"; "Stargard" is of Slavic origin and means "old fortress".

When visiting the fortress do not feel dispirited by the many steps leading up to the donjon, for your effort will be rewarded with an extensive view over the lovely countryside. When touring this area you should take the time to visit the Marie-Hager House: The former house of the artist exhibits a representative selection of her works. If you plan to spend more time in this area, the hiking trails and cycle paths beckon you to explore the magnificent surroundings. Starting from here, the 27-km-long fortress trail will lead you to the old fortress of Penzlin, the Alte Burg Penzlin, to mention only one.

Historical facts

The town of Stargard was first mentioned in 1170, in those days still part of Pomerania. In the wake of the Treaty of Kremmen, Stargard was ceded to Brandenburg in 1236. Forthwith, John I, Margrave of Brandenburg, set out to build a fortress. By 1258 the work was largely completed...
