Demmin, Hanseatic town

"Se is din und min" (Old German for "she is yours and mine") was the vow of two princesses, who both owned the town. According to the town chronicles from the 18th century, this is how the Hanseatic town of Demmin came to its name.

The rivers Trebel, Tollense und Peene meet in Demmin. So the choice is yours for a boat trip on one of the rivers. In the early days, even the vessels of the Hanseatic League, the Hanse, navigated across the Peene River to dock at the harbour of Demmin. For that reason, the variety of brick buildings built in the Hanseatic style characterises the townscape today: the church of St. Bartholomeo, a town gate named Luisentor and a powder magazine, the Pulverturm. You like to fish? A good catch may not be guaranteed, but chances are good, since the town of Demmin is said to have the largest source of freshwater fish in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Historical facts

Demmin looks back on a long and eventful history. The first settlers from the Slavic clan of the Wilzen colonised this region already in the 5th century.
