"At the time we were imprisoned, none of us were democrats; at the time we were released, every one of us was". Those were the words the author Fritz Reuther used to describe the impact of his detention in Dömitz. He did not come to the town on the Elbe River of his own free will but was sent to the casemates of the Festung Dömitz as a political prisoner.

It is dark, the air is humid: Truly, the atmosphere in the casemates of the former fortress, the Festung Dömitz, does not invite to stay. Nevertheless, you should take the time to visit the fortress, as it belongs to the most well-preserved structures of its kind in northern Germany. After leaving the confined quarters behind, you will enjoy the vastness of the Mecklenburgisches Elbetal National Park all the more. Wander along the inland dunes and watch the red kites circling the skies.

Historical facts

The history of the town of Dömitz can be traced back to the early Middle Ages. In the course of the colonisation of the east by the Germans in the 12th century, the region was captured by the Earl of Dannenberg. Dömitz was granted town status in 1259 and was ceded to Mecklenburg in 1423...
