Dorf Mecklenburg

approx. 2,900 inhabitants

The fortress "Michelenburg" was first mentioned in chronicles more than a thousand years ago. According to their linguistic roots the words "Miklin" and "Mekel" mean "big": At the beginning of Mecklenburg's development a big Slavic fortress once stood here.

Dorf Mecklenburg

You can just about imagine where the ramparts of the old fortress grounds once stood. If you do not want to plunge into the past that deeply, then you should visit the agro-museum, the Agrarmuseum: the noise of old engines echoes through the showrooms, the smell of fuel is in the air. Here you will experience historic machines at work, as many of the exhibits are still functioning.

Historical facts

In the first part of the 7th century the Slavic clan of the Obotrites constructed a fortress near a village called Dorf Mecklenburg today. The German King Otto III quartered the Slavic fortress in 995. In the same year he signed a charter which laid the foundation for the country of Mecklenburg. Niklot, Prince of the Obotrites, abandoned the fortress in 1160. In 1163 his son Pribislav stood up against the German rule. Four years later Pribislav received the fortress as a feud and named himself after his residence, Prince of Mecklenburg.

In the course of the centuries the Obotrite fortress was left to dereliction. In 1839 the historian, archivist and director of the grand-ducal antiquities collection Friedrich Lisch excavated the remnants of the fortress.
