Gnoien

approx. 3,000 inhabitants

Robber-knights are believed to have stricken terror in the Trebel Valley east of Gnoien. On their escape parts of the looted treasures supposedly sank into the moor because the oak planks that secured the paths broke. The treasury was never to be seen again; however, remnants of the plank roadway were retrieved in the 19th century.

As you approach Gnoien from Teterow, two prominent structures will immediately catch your eye: the Gothic parish church St. Marien and the water tower. The Heimatstube, a museum exhibiting local tools of trade and antiquated household articles, and the old smock mill, the Holländermühle, describe every-day life in the past centuries.

Historical facts

In 1250 German settlers laid the first foundations of the town of Gnoien. The orthogonal network of streets proves that town development followed a systematic plan.

In the Middle Ages Gnoien had a fortress which was first mentioned in 1331 and destroyed by a fire in 1552.

However, the town was not spared either: The only structure which survived the serious fire in 1710 was the parish church St. Marien. The construction of the brick church with two naves began in the middle of the 13th century. Around 1445 the west tower was added on.

The step-by-step redevelopment of the town of Gnoien began at the beginning of the 1990s.
