"Goldberg, the town of the three lies - no gold, no hills, no town." Common parlance is mistaken: The town was already chartered in 1248, Goldberg is surrounded by a beautifully undulating landscape and the pretension that there is no gold here has been proved wrong since 1980. Gerd Wessig, a Goldberg citizen won the Olympic gold metal in high jump.

Goldberg is a wonderful starting point for your excursions into the surrounding countryside. All around the picturesque Goldberg Lake and over undulating hills, many trails will lead you through the environs which are very rich in flora and fauna. On your tour you should not miss the Dobbertin monastery. The Langenhägener Seewiesen Nature Reserve, where you can sight many hundreds of cranes on autumn evenings, is within walking distance of Goldberg.
Goldberg was given its name by Pribislav I of Parchim in 1248.
The Goldberg fortress was erected northeast of the settlement in 1316. First the residence of the Princes of Werle, the
fortress was later converted into an office residence. With the discovery of the town water spring in 1816, the number
of inhabitants increased. This was, however, countered by the fact that in 1856 every ninth townsman died of
cholera.
