Güstrow

approx. 30,000 inhabitants

The sculptor and author Ernst Barlach created many of his famous works in his adopted hometown Güstrow, among others "The Hovering". A copy of the second cast can be seen in the cathedral, Güstrower Dom. The original was melted down during the Nazi era.

Other famous works of Ernst Barlach can be found in the Ernst-Barlach-Museum and in Barlach's studio. Sculptures, original drawings and prints by the artist are on display. You should also visit the Residenzschloss (Residential Castle) of the Schwerin dukes ? the architecture as well as the exhibitions are worth seeing. Do you like to get down to the bottom of things? In the aqua-tunnel of the Güstrow National Environment Park you can observe pike and stickleback and still keep your feet dry.

Historical facts

The name Güstrow was derived from the Slavic "Guscerov" meaning "lizard town". At the crossing of old trade routes, Heinrich Borwin II had a cathedral built in 1226; in 1228 this was followed by a fortress. Already in the same year the status of a town was conferred on the community. Cloth-makers, breweries and a large wool market brought prosperity to the town in the 14th and 15th centuries...
