Hagenow is pronounced "Ha-ge-no". The "ow" at the end of many place names in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is a legacy of the Slavs who settled in Mecklenburg over 1,000 years ago.

Hagenow is a very good place to start out on a bicycle trip into the surrounding countryside: You will ride through a diversified landscape between bright rape fields into the Lewitz or through the Naturpark Mecklenburgisches Elbtal to the Dömitz Fortress. In Hagenow you should visit the neo-Gothic municipal church - the Stadtkirche.
Hagenow developed from a village - that can be traced back as far as to the year 1190 - to a documented town in
1370. But it was not until 1754 that Hagenow was granted the full status of a town. Above all, Hagenow was the
marketplace for the rural surroundings.
In the course of the construction of railway between Berlin and Hamburg, to Schwerin as well as Oldesloe, the town
experienced an economic boom. Numerous companies sprang up, among others brickworks and tileries, a brewery and a
roofing felt factory. Later on, the food industry intensified activities here.
