Heiligendamm, Baltic seaside resort

Heiligendamm, the "White Town by the Sea", not only fascinated Russia´s Tsar Peter I, Lord Nelson and Franz Kafka. Representatives of the seven leading industrial nations and Russia, in short G8, also met in Heiligendamm in 2007.

Heiligendamm, Baltic seaside resort

"White Town by the Sea" - this description of Heiligendamm is very fitting. Just look around: The numerous white houses dazzle a bit in the sunshine. Up-country you have a very nice view of the unique classicistic buildings of the oldest German seaside resort.

Historical facts

Heiligendamm is the oldest seaside resort in Germany. At the end of the 18th century, Duke Friedrich Franz I of Mecklenburg-Schwerin began to convert Bad Doberan and the "Holy Dam" into a summer residence. He did that following the advice of his personal physician Samuel Gottlieb Vogel. Soon Doberan and Heiligendamm developed into a preferred rendezvous for the nobility and the bourgeoisie.

During the first half of the 19th century those classicistic buildings were erected, which have given Heiligendamm its special character until today. One of the buildings is the sanatorium, which was built in 1816 according to the layout of the architect Carl Theodor Severin.

Since 1886 the narrow-gauge railway "Molli" has connected Heiligendamm to Bad Doberan.

Heiligendamm is part of Bad Doberan, which has been a state-certified spa since 2000 and a certified seaside health resort since 2004.
