Klütz

approx. 3,100 inhabitants

A major part of the plot of "Jahrestage" by Uwe Johnson takes place in Klütz. In the novel the town is called "Jerichow", it is true, but the descriptions of the castle, church, marketplace and railway station clearly fit the town of "Klütz".

Klütz

Thatched farmhouses, old churches, bright yellow rape fields in spring - that is the "Klützer Winkel", the landscape around Klütz near the Baltic Sea not far from Boltenhagen. You should visit the baroque castle, Schloss Bothmer. The concerts on the castle grounds are a very special experience.

Historical facts

Already in the Middle Ages the forest of the "Klützer Winkel" suffered considerable cut-backs by large clearings made in order to render the extremely fertile soil useable for farming. The rich harvests ? which gave the area the nickname "Speckwinkel" ("fat angle") - could be shipped from the neighbouring harbours of Wismar and Lübeck.

Until the 19th century only a few families were in possession of the land. Many a lordly estate built in the baroque or classicistic style is testimony to those times past.

Boltenhagen, discovered in the 19th century by bathing tourists, belongs to the region and is an important seaside resort which is as frequently visited today as it was in the past.
