Approximately 100 master shoemakers who made their living in this town during the 19th century gave Kröpelin its nickname "shoemaker town".

In the town's museum a complete shoemaker workshop reminds of the long craftsmenship tradition of this town. If you do not mind biking up and down small hills, you can best discover the diversity of the surroundings by bike.
In 1177 Kröpelin was mentioned for the first time in writing under the name "Crapelin". It was given the status of a town between 1235 and 1250 by Prince Heinrich Borwin III of Rostock. In 1270 the construction of the municipal church began.
Up to the 18th century Kröpelin suffered from numerous fires. Its location on the military road between Wismar and Rostock led to additional repeated burdens. The quartering of soldiers during the Thirty Years' War brought along with it hunger and epidemic diseases.
Kröpelin is not only said to be a town of cobblers and shoemakers, but also a town of mills. The existence of the first watermill was authenticated for the year 1219. Today, the Dutch windmill erected in 1906 is a landmark of Kröpelin.
The town hall of Kröpelin was erected in 1900 in the style of historicism. Since its redevelopment in the middle of the1990s, it is now aglow in new splendour.
