Kühlungsborn, Baltic seaside resort

approx. 7,200 inhabitants

It is not the continually cool weather that gave the Baltic seaside resort its name. The up-country landscape in called "Kühlung". Big breaches and hollows called "Kuhlen" characterise this range of hills, and soon "Kuhle" led to the word "Kühlung" (meaning "cooling" in German).

Sand as far as the eye can see. In summer you can laze on the beach, in winter bizarre natural ice formations will tempt you to take a long walk along the beach. Just have a seat on the 250-metre-long pier for a while. From there you have the best view of the long promenade and the beautiful houses along the beach. The seaside resort architecture dominates the view. Do you want to give your car a rest? Puffing and smoking, the narrow-gauge railway Molli will take you to Heiligendamm or Bad Doberan.

Historical facts

The Baltic Sea resort Kühlungsborn was established in 1938 through the merger of the villages Brunshaupten, Fulgen and Arendsee. It follows from documented sources that the town area was populated in the 12th century. The inhabitants were mainly farmers and fishermen. It was not until the middle of the 19th century that tourism was discovered as an additional source of income. Resort tourism became the decisive economic factor and is still predominant for Kühlungsborn today.
