For a long time Lübz was the residence of the widows of the Mecklenburg dukes. When a Mecklenburg duke died, his wife retired and no longer lived in the ducal residence.

Lübz is easily accessible by boat. You don't even need a boat-driving license in order to travel on the waterways of the Müritz and Elde. In Lübz you should have a look at the defense tower. Like the centre of the town it was built in the Middle Ages. If you enjoy drinking a glass of beer from our part of the country, you will certainly remember having seen the silhouette of the tower on a bottle label.
The Lake District and the Elde-Müritz waterway were ideal for an early settlement in that region. Lübz was first mentioned in 1306, when the Eldeburg was built by the Margraves Hermann and Otto von Brandenburg. The peel tower belonging to it is still well-preserved today.
In 1456 Lübz was assigned the status of a town. After being considered the duke's widow?s residence, it lost its significance after the death of Duchess Sophie.
The town enjoyed a commercial boom in the year 1836, when the Elde-Havel Canal was extended and Lübz was connected to the waterway. Significant industrial establishment followed, such as the brewery in 1877, the dairy in 1890 and the sugar factory in 1894. The brewery still exists today and has developed into an important economic factor for this region.
