Without magnetic ignition no automobile with a petrol engine would have been able to move until the 60s. The inventor Siegfried Marcus was born in Malchin and here he started his apprenticeship as a mechanic.

In the surroundings of Malchin and in Mecklenburgische Schweiz (Mecklenburg's Switzerland) you will not find the Alpine mountains, however, it's a great place to hike. From some elevations you can look far into the countryside and even watch, for example, how large flocks of wild geese gather in the fields after the harvest. If you go rambling in a southwestern direction, you should visit the castle, Schloss Basedow. In Malchin you should take a look at the Stadtkirche: the church architecture as well as its interior furnishings are well worth a visit.
Emerging from a Slavic village, Malchin was granted a town charter by Nikolaus von Werle in the year 1236. Due to
its favourable location where Malchin Lake and Kummerow Lake closely approach each other, at the crossing point of
several trade routes, the town was economically and strategically significant for a long time. Between 1621 and 1918
the representatives of the estates of Mecklenburg held their conferences in Malchin, alternating with Sternberg.
During the Second World War two thirds of the town centre was completely destroyed.
