Neubrandenburg

Nine life-size terracotta figures stand with their hands raised high at the Stargarder Tor, one of the four city gates of Neubrandenburg. Nobody has yet been able to explain the meaning. Fritz Reuter declared: "Dat sünd uns Ratsherren, de häben die Hänn' und seggen: Wie hewwen ok kein Geld." ("These are our town councilors, they raise their hands and say: We don't have any money either.")

Neubrandenburg is called "City of the Four Gates". You should take a look at those gates, especially the Treptower Tor with the interesting Regional Museum. The gates are part of the medieval city wall, which is almost completely intact. If you take a walk along the wall, you will come across the reconstructed Wieckhäuser (Guard Houses) at regular intervals. In the evening you should listen to a concert in the Gothic Marienkirche. The brick building was converted into a concert church at the end of the 90s.

Historical facts

Neubrandenburg was founded in 1248 on the banks of the Tollense Lake by order of Margrave Johann I of Brandenburg. Just like old Brandenburg, the new town received important privileges and rights.
