The railway crossings south of Neukalen are something special: the level-crossing gates do not block the road but rather the track. This is because only rail trolleys travel the railway Dargun-Salem and they have to give way to the car traffic.

On the rail trolley you will feel a pain in your thighs as you take the track uphill for some time. Just take a break and park the rail trolley on the side track in Neukalen. At the old station there is a little exhibition about railway history that you should not miss. In the surroundings of Neukalen you can also take trips through the beautiful countryside off the tracks: On the Peene River and on Kummerow Lake you can just glide along in a canoe or in a houseboat.
In 1244 Prince Borwin founded a town near the village of Altkalen. In 1281 the town was abandoned. At the same place a new town was built up systematically: Neukalen.
