The unification of Germany in 1871 would not have been possible without a man from Parchim. Helmuth Graf von Moltke led the Prussian army to victory against France and, along with Bismarck, is considered to be a founder of the German Empire. Today the Moltke Memorial reminds us of this courageous leader.

Strolling through Parchim you will easily recognize two styles of architecture: On one hand, you will encounter many well-preserved half-timbered houses, on the other hand, you will discover some mighty brick buildings, such as the churches St. Georg and St. Marien or the town hall. When did you last go to the theatre? The Mecklenburg Landestheater in Parchim presents well-known classical and modern plays in a lovely atmosphere.
Originally there was a fortress built at the place where Parchim lies now; it was first mentioned in 1170. Around 1200, merchants settled at the Elde passage near the fortress.
