Penzlin

approx. 2,800 inhabitants

If Germans want to read Homer´s "Iliad" and the "Odyssey" in verse, they either reach for the old Greek original or the translation by Johann Heinrich Voß. Voß became aware of his talent for old languages at the Penzlin municipal school.

Penzlin

You will surely feel a shiver running down your spine in Penzlin now and then: In the old fortress, Alte Burg you will find the Museum for Magic and Witch-Hunting. The surroundings of Penzlin, however, are less sinister than the dungeons of the fortress: You can experience untouched nature up close on the numerous hiking trails.

Historical facts

Penzlin emerged from an old Slavic settlement. Since 1283 it has also had a town charter. At about the same time a fortress was built on a hill north of the town. Two large fires destroyed the major part of the town in 1558 and 1725.

A dynasty of the knights von Maltzan owned the fortress from 1414 on. In August 1501 the von Maltzans bought the town of Penzlin with all sovereign privileges. These were frequently the subject of dispute between the town and the owner of the fortress. In the year 1777 Penzlin was finally able to reacquire its rights. The last privileges were not abolished until the November Revolution in 1918.
