Plau am See

Historical facts

Plau am See developed from a Slavic settlement by the name of "Plawe" ("Rafting Town"). Its location directly at the outlet of the Elde into Plau Lake was advantageous because there was an important trade route close by.

The oldest document attests the town charter from the year 1235. Apparently the town had grown considerably because of the settlement of farmers and craftsmen. Over many centuries farming and handcraft remained the most important branches of trade in Plau am See.

From the 19th century on, industry also settled in this region. A machine factory, an iron foundry and a cloth factory developed. In 1845 the first paddle steamer sailed across the lakes to Röbel by Lake Müritz.

Today Plau am See profits from its beautiful location and the numerous opportunities the surrounding landscape offers tourists. And: Plau is a certified climatic health resort whose fresh air is conducive to wellness.
