Redefin is famous for the breeding of horses, rich in tradition. As early as 1720 there was a stud farm in Redefin owned by a sovereign who provided noble horses to the Schwerin dukes. Finally in 1812 Duke Friedrich Franz I of Mecklenburg-Schwerin founded the Redefin National Stud Farm. "The improvement of horse breeding" was to be the purpose of the foundation. The number of horses kept in Redefin increased constantly until the First World War.
After 1951 Redefin stud farm served as the site of the state stallion stables for Mecklenburg and Vorpommern. At the beginning of the 60s, massive restructuring in agriculture led to a decisive turning point in horse breeding and horse keeping in Redefin. However, at that time saddle-horse marketing also began.
After German Unification the stud farm was taken over by the federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Since then considerable investments have been made for the conservation and restoration of the historical premises of the stud farm. A recent highlight was the construction of the new indoor-riding arena inaugurated in 1999.
